Cost of Discipleship

Week 1 - Costly Grace

Link to Sunday Service Recording

Text: John 1:16-17 (ESV)

For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Main Message

We need to realize that the grace we received from God is not cheap. It is not something that we can ignore or thrown away.

  • Costly Grace Transforms

    • The costly grace we received should transform us.

  • Costly Grace is a Gift of God

    • Costly grace is the gift of God freely given to us who never deserve it. We don't deserve to receive grace, but God gave it to us anyway.

  • Costly Grace is Greater than our Sin

    • The purpose of super abundant grace is to replace the reign of sin. God's grace overthrows sin and death.

Reflection Questions

  • How do you view God's grace?

  • Do we view God's grace the same way that God view it, that it is costly and not cheap?

  • What are ways that we can do to show God that His grace can transform our life?

  • Have you accepted God's grace?

  • How can we tell people about God's grace?

Week 2 - Call to Discipleship

Test: Mark 2:14 (ESV)

And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.

Main Message

Discipleship is recognizing the costly grace that we have received. And since we were bought with a price, we lay down our life to follow Jesus.

Discipleship begins with responding to a call just as Levi did when he was called to follow Jesus.

  • Hurried Disciple

    • Are you following to see miracles, to be where the action is? Will you still follow when there are no more miracles?

  • Procrastinating Disciple

    • When Jesus calls, we must answer here and now and follow him immediately wherever he leads us.

  • Hesitant Disciple

    • I will follow, but ...

Reflection Questions

  • Are we following to see miracles? What happens when there are not more miracles?

  • Are you following to gain blessings  or are you after the blessings instead of the blesser?

  • Are you following because  you have devoted your life to the call and ready to take up the cross?

  • Are you willing to let go of things that will hinder you from following Jesus?
